Tucked within the Canonbury Conservation Area, this Grade II-listed home is believed to be one of the oldest surviving residences in Islington, its earliest fabric dating to the late 17th century. Set behind mature greenery on one of Canonbury’s most sought-after streets, the house has been meticulously curated by its current owners to balance centuries-old character with modern refinement.
Internally, the house unfolds over five light-filled storeys, its east-to-west orientation flooding each level with natural light from dawn to dusk. Original proportions and detailing remain throughout: panelled walls, turned newels, delicate cornicing and 18th- and 19th-century fireplaces. Underfoot, original painted floorboards run the length of the house, complemented by bespoke cabinetry by Plain English – from the kitchen to the dressing room of the principal suite – and handcrafted pieces from makers such as Tyler Hays of BDDW and Christopher Howe. Workstead lighting and linen drapery by Lucy Bathurst add to the sense of understated luxury.
The lower ground floor is anchored by a warm, inviting Plain English kitchen and breakfast room, with Belgian Blue Fossil stone counters, a Lacanche range and adjoining utility space, opening directly to the garden – landscaped by Chelsea Gold-winning Studio Gazerwitz with a corten steel pavilion. The ground floor retains two formal reception rooms, now arranged as a flowing, open-plan living and library space. Above, the first floor has been reconfigured to create a decadent principal suite with a full-width bedroom, bespoke cabinetry and marble *(only the fireplace is marble)* bathroom. Two further double bedrooms and a family bathroom occupy the second floor, while the top floor houses a versatile study with rooftop views.
This is a house shaped as much by its history as by its present custodians – a rare, private sanctuary in one of London’s most connected neighbourhoods.
Alwyne Place is one of Canonbury’s most celebrated addresses, moments from the tranquillity of Canonbury Square, New River Walk and the highly regarded Canonbury Primary School (rated “Outstanding” by Ofsted), as well as North Bridge House Senior School (Canonbury). Upper Street’s restaurants, independent shops and theatres are within walking distance, as is Highbury & Islington station (Victoria Line, Overground and National Rail). Highbury Fields offers tennis courts and open green space nearby, while the street itself enjoys a strong community spirit with long-established neighbours and virtually no through traffic since recent road calming measures.
